About the test

This is a fast yes/no vocabulary check built on the method language researchers use (the Vocabulary Size Test / LexTALE family). You see real English words one at a time and simply mark whether you know each one — there's nothing to type and no definitions to write.

It's adaptive. The test starts at a middle difficulty and adjusts after every answer: know a word and the next one gets harder; miss it and it eases off. That's how it homes in on your level in about 15 words instead of hundreds. A few invented words are mixed in to catch over-guessing, so your result stays honest.

When you finish, Wordlize estimates your vocabulary level — anywhere from middle school and high school through SAT, ACT, GRE, and rare “sesquipedalian” words — and recommends a word list and plan built around your result. No account is needed to take the test.
